#1 - What's Wrong & Right

What’s Wrong and Right?

o Using at least one specific example, how was “sin” treated within this film? Was it glamorized/glorified, or did it receive more of a biblical treatment (redemption, justice, mercy, grace, forgiveness, reconciliation, resolution, etc. etc.) Try to use different examples than the ones mentioned in previous posts. Feel free to disagree with other peoples’ ideas.

o God says we should put nothing “worthless” in front of our eyes. What is good, excellent, redemptive about this film? What was worthwhile? Was anything worthless about it? Can you wholeheartedly recommend this film? To anyone? A pastor? A friend? A sibling? Teacher? Why? Why not? Who would this film NOT be appropriate for and why? Biblically explain and draw your conclusions.

  1. One example of a sin is pollution. It was very redemptive because the people that were in space came back to earth and cleaned up the earth and planted seeds for plants.

  2. The good and redemptive part about it was that the people stopped being lazy and actually realized that they need to stop depending on machines and start to depend on themselves because machines aren't always going to be there for you. I would recommend this to anyone. But I would not recommend this to children under the age of seven. The reason why I say this is because the won't get it.

  3. I agree with Kelsey that pollution was a really big sin in the movie. They definately did not glamorize it and showed exactly how bad pollution can be. In the movie, they showed the consequences of pollution and what could happen to the earth if it became too polluted.

Another big sin in the movie is laziness. The people on the spaceship depended way too much on machines and couldn't do anything for themselves. This wasn't glorified either. They actually used another sin, obesity, to show just how lazy the people had become.

This movie was worthwhile, because even though it had sin in it, it showed the consequences of that sin. In other words it didn't make sin look good.

  4. I agree with Kelsey and Rachel. Laziness was one of the major sins in the movie. Those people got so lazy that they couldn't feed themselves. They had to put all their food in the form of drink so they could eat out of a straw. They also relied on the machines so much that they couldn't do anything. I think thats the way we are as people. We try to rely on man made things instead of God and we end up falling short.

  5. I think another big one was lying because the robots were lying to the people about everything, the people thought that the way they lived was the way they lived and they didn't know about the pollution or the clean up project they just thought they were living life the way it is.

I also don't think obesity is a sin, it is part of the sin laziness, if you don't take care of our bodies then we get fat, but I don't think that's a sin.

    1. I agree with Josh. I don't think that obesity is a sin, because God says that he loves us just the way we are.

    2. I agree with both Josh and Eryn, I don't think that being obese is a sin. However, in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 it says that we need to honor God with our bodies. Staying in shape is one way we can honor God. Filling our bodies with junk food is not pleasing to God since they aren't our bodies, they're God's bodies that He has given to us.

    3. I found a Bible verse talking about over eating. Ezekiel 16:49 says, "Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aide the poor and needy." This verse is listing the sins of Sodom and one of them was excess of food. God tells us to take care of our bodys and over eating is not taking care of our bodies.

Eryn, God does love us just the way we are, but He loves us no matter how bad we sin, or what we do. For example, God still loves us when we lie, but that doesn't mean that lying isn't a sin.

    4. Berry, as Sems was saying obesity isn't a sin. What we are doing is not treating God's bodies the way that we should. Were just putting them to waste.

  6. Josh, can you name one way that the robots were lying. I kinda get what you are saying.

    1. Kelsey, one example in the movie that I can remember when a robot lies is when the auto pilot robot tells the captain the the earth is still too toxic. The video he shows is around 700 years old and they found a plant, which means the air has to be not as toxic as it used to be and livable.

The sin in this movie is not glamoured, but condemned. They diffently do not show the pollution as a good thing, but as a bad thing destroying the earth. Watching the people do nothing at all, except sit around and do everything virtually did not seem exactly the most appealing to me. The dirrectors did a good job showing that the sin they were commiting was not something good to do, but something bad.

I diffently agree with Rachel, Josh, Brandon, and Kelsey. They pretty much showed all the sins in the movie except idolism. The people idolize there virtual screen infront of them and seem to use it way too much. If you disagree with the idolism being in the movie please comment.

    2. True. But Josh was stating a totally different point than what you just said.

    3. Kelsey. The way the robots lied was when the plant came on the ship it appeared that it was a false alarm but actually the little robot cop had taken it to make sure they couldn't go home. I hope that clears things up for ya.

    4. Yes. Thank you Josh. I remember it clearly now. I was thinking of a totally different thing

  7. i definitly agree with you callier, infact i listed idolatry as one of my sins during class. the movie does not glorify it though. it shows how unconnected they are with life around them, and how "stuck" tey are to the screens. when wall-e breaks the two people away from their screens they become aware of the world around them. they then become more active by going to the pool and showing affection towards eachother.

    1. I agree with Sidney that idolatry is a big sin in Wall-e. The people on the ship sit around all day staring at their scrrens. Their are so engrossed in thier electronics they became fat and could hardly walk.

  8. lazyness is one of the major sins in walle. all the people are so fat they just let themselfes go cause they all avritise that lazyness is a good thing/ to relax every once and a while. ;D

    1. I agree with lily. Laziness was a BIG part of Wall-e. As I said befroe those people just relyed on machines to do all their work for them.

    2. I don't think that it is a sin to relax every once in a while, in Genesis 2 it says that even God rested after His work. But I think I know what you're trying to get at. These people NEVER did anything for themselves until they were forced to, and the movie does make it look luxurious but it also shows consequences that come up later, such as not being able to walk because of their previous laziness.

  9. Just a reminder to use good grammar. Remember, we will be grading based on not only your content but grammar as well. That includes smiley faces, capitalization, and punctuation. This is academic writing.

Back to the film: One of the themes I see is how humanity let the machines take care of the problems they faced, which resulted in their disconnect with the world around them. Are we on the same path. For example as I walk around in the mornings at school more than half of us have computer/phone/iPad screens in front of our faces while 100s of people walk by us. In your opinion are we already disconnecting from the world around us like those in the film? Is Wall-E a prophetic vision of where we are headed? What are your thoughts? If you think it is a problem, how do we fix it?

    1. Yes, I do think that we, as a community, are disconnectiog with the world around us just like the people in the film. We have become so lazy, we don't even know what to do so we just follow what other people do.

    2. I agree. Technology can be a good thing, but it is bad when we just sit around on our phones or computers and not engaging with the people around us.

    3. It is important to create limits of time spent in front of a screen, such as computers, TVs, IPADS, and phones. Electronics cannot take the place of relationships and real interactions with people. Its different when you are with someone talking in person, its better for you, your brain and your heart. A lot of what we communicate to each other is nonverbal. Its the expression on our face, the posture of our body, the high five, and a reassuring hug. Electronics just can't do that.

  10. Laziness is a HUGE sin in Wall-e. All the people on the ship rely on robots to do everything for them and I mean EVERYTHING. The robots wake them up, make their lunch, and get them from place to place. The bible says that laziness is one of the 7 deadly sins. Becoming lazy can be very dangerous. Proverbs 12:24 "diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in forced labor."

    1. erica, i really emjoy hearing that their actually is a statement in the bible agreeing with lazinness as a bad sin. this proves to me that walle is full of sin (laziness) but it is showed to us not in a good way. it makes us think, "wow thats rediculous" or "how could people live like that"....either way it makes us think badly of laziness. so the way the movie portrays it is correct.

    2. Another Passage that explains laziness Proverbs 6:6-11
      Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest. How long will you lie there, you sluggard?
When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest—and poverty will come on you like a thief
and scarcity like an armed man.

    3. I agree with eri how the major sin was laziness, and that they relyed on the robots for everything instead of doing it themselves. In one part of the movie they had Moe (the cleaning robot) go all around the whole ship to clean up wall-e's tracks and he ended up saving them by holding open the door, there's an example on how it could be good.

  11. I agree with Sidney, the movie DID show laziness, but it also showed the results of it. The people were really fat, and even forgot how to walk. The movie condemns laziness just like the Bible does also known as "sloth". God gave us Sunday to rest but the people rested Everyday.

  12. I think a big sin in the movie was lying. During one of the scenes in the movie, an automated voice says, "We have everything you need to make you happy." This statement is obviously not true as nothing except God can make us truly happy.

There were many redemptive scenes about this movie. For example- at the end of the movie when they are all back on earth, The people take their first step in redeeming the world that was overcome with pollution and plant a little plant. They also start overcoming laziness and begin walking and talking to one another face-face.

I would recommend this film to just about anyone. Maybe not so much 8 and under just because younger kids probably wouldn't understand it as well

  13. I agree with Elisabeth, I think lying was a really big sin in the movie. The ship is set up so that the people feel like they need whatever is being advertised. Like when the screen tells them that 'blue is the new red' and they all automatically switch to wearing blue. This kind of system really just lies to the people and makes them feel like they need something they really don't.

I would also recommend this move to everyone. I think it has some really good messages that can really make you think.

  14. I agree with Katherine, that lying was a big sin in the film. People in the ship have to have the latest thing, and the people never knew anything about earth, which was their real home. They also were tricked into thinking that Big n' Large was the only thing that they had. It wasn't until the end of the movie where the people realized that they didn't have to have everything.

  15. I would recommend this film to people of all ages. This film has many life lessons taught, like you don't have to have everything in life, and if we keep on taking bad care of the land God gave us, then it will be polluted just like in the film. John 17:24 says,"“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world". This verse shows that God loved us before he even made the world, and that it is our duty to take care of it.

  16. I would recommend it for people 8 years and up. Children that our younger may not be able to get the messages that the film is trying to portray. It's an emotional roller coaster and may also not be good for younger children because of that. Seeing the world destroyed can really be difficult for young children to understand.

  17. I would recommend this film to people of all ages, Its fun, Intertaining and has a great inspiring messages. Its definitly a film that keeps you on your toes. It has its parts where it mayb be intense for some kids but i would say this movie is a great inspiration for all kids to follow and stand up for what they belive in.

  20. Is resting really that bad? In genesis 2 like Wright said above, resting is not bad. On the seventh day God rested. The thing is though these people abused resting. They rest way to often and never even work. Basically resting isn't bad, but the people abused it.

    1. I think too much of pretty much anything can be a bad thing, especially resting. God wants us to enjoy resting, but he wants us to enjoy work too! If we rest all the time then we don't really enjoy it anymore because we become so spoiled by it and used to it. I think this move is a great example of what can happen if we abuse what God has given us.

  21. I would recomend this movie to anyone except maybe like 6 year olds and younger. There is a little bit of violence in it and they are just too young for it in my mind. Anyone one else though wanting a good story told through a movie should check it out.

  22. The movie deals with the humans somewhat, since they weren't able to walk and they basically had to start over at the end of the movie. But they were rewarded in the sense that they were no longer ignorant to the truth and their eyes were opened to the beautiful place called Earth that no one knew about until the captain's research.

  23. I would recommend this movie to all ages. It really shows the dangers of laziness and lying. It teaches us what can happen when we start to rely on technology instead of ourselves. Although it's a little violent, it is still a great story.
