#2 - Themes

THEMES

Give a major theme/idea/message of the film. Discuss what you think the film’s point was (in relation to this theme) – and then comment on whether or not you think Scripture agrees with the way the theme was presented. Employ at least 1 Bible verse to make your point. Remember to use the Scripture in context. Again, feel free to comment on and disagree with other peoples’ ideas; feel free to explore other themes than the ones mentioned already.

  1. I think the biggest theme of this movie is unity because all the people and wall-e had to unite to overcome the robots who were preventing them from going home.

    1. Rom. 15:5 is a good verse to look at for this subject on unity an how it is played out in the movie.

  2. I agree with Josh. Unity is a big part of the movie. Those people realized that they need to come together as a community and work on cleaning up their mess. It's like us sometimes we need to clean up our mess aso we don't end up being lazy just like the people in the movie.

    1. I also agree, when Wall-e got stuck under the machine, they all worked together to get the boot with the plant back to the machine to save him.Unity is a BIG part in this movie. Also, when all the police robots came to stop wall-e and eva the broken robots helped them to get past them so they could help the captain.

  3. I agree with Josh and Kelsey that unity is one of the main themes of the movie. I found a Bible verse that talks about the idea of unity. Psalm 133:1 says, "How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!" God likes it when we are united.

  4. I agree with Rachel. God loves it when his people aree together as one because they are representing him.

  5. Josh: Love your thought on unity as a theme. Can you give some specific examples of where we see the theme of unity? If anyone else has some examples please chime in.

  6. I think an example of unity would be when the people were falling when the ship was tilting over. They were all trying to help each other, when before none of them had really communicated with each other. Also, when all the robots teamed up to defeat the other robots that were trying to defeat Eve and Wall-E, that was an example of unity. Another verse supporting unity is:
    1 Corinthians 1:10
I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.

Being united is important to God, we are all His people and we should be able to unite in our faith.

  7. the "miss fits" or the "broken" robots all ganged up together to fight off the wave of bad robots the auto the evil robot sent out to stop the "rouge robots" eve and wall-e. or the fact that the people towards the end stood and passed the plant up to eve and she got it into the machine so thatit would stop from crushing wall-e.

    1. Sydney can you rephrase what you are saying because it doesn't really make sense to me.

  8. I liked the whole Wall-E and Eve thing. My favorite theme involved the Captain and his people and the way they realized their state of affairs (laziness, etc.) was really a state of sin and the restoration he initiated.

A long time has passed and the humans have forgotten their true purpose. When analyzing some dirt from Wall-E, the Captain accidentally discovered the true purpose of their cruise was to find a viable place to recolonize the human race.

The easy way out (which the humans had been taking for 700 years now) would have been to disregard their original mission and keep on living the same empty lives they had right now. Nobody would have known and the Captain could have continued to live it up. However, he took the more noble course and decided to let everyone on the ship know their true purpose. He ended up having to fight "Otto" (auto) the robot to restore their true calling.

The Biblical parallel to this is King Josiah in 2 Kings 22. Hilkiah, the high priest, found the book of the law (Deuteronomy) in the temple. It had been lost for a long time and the Judahites were not following its commands and they were defiling the temple. Josiah had it read to him and he tore his clothes because he realized Israel was in a state of sin.

Rather than take the easy way out Josiah called all the elders of Jerusalem together and made a covenant before the Lord to uphold his commands, just like the Captain. Because of his faithfulness, God spared Judah the wrath he was planning for them and Judah was restored.

Sorry for the long post! I thought it was a strong parallel and really illustrates the way god redeems/restores us even when we have gone down the wrong path.

  9. I agree that unity is a huge theme in this movie. In wall-e on the ship all the people were so engrossed in their electronics they hardly knew what was going on around them. Most people never talked to one another. The only kind of communication was on video chat even if they were right next to eachother. When the ship started to tilt everyone became aware of their surroundings. In the end they were all a community again.

    2. I also agree with Erica's post. Those people never communicated with each other. So when the ship was tilted they all had to unite and communicate. Once they did that they were able to avoid disaster.

  10. I think another theme was Good Overcoming Evil. In the movie, all of the robots were "evil" and were controlling the "innocent, good" people, but in the end, the people destroy the robots and "overcome the evil".

In the Bible there's a lot of good overcoming evil. One story of the Bible that we can compare is David and Goliath. David was fighting for God and showing the people that God was the ultimate one fighting. In the end, David won the fight.

    1. I agree with the theme good overcoming evil. An example of good overcoming evil is when the captain won the battle against auto about going back to earth. A verse to go with this is “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21).

    2. That's a great Bible verse for this situation!

  11. I thought another big theme from Wall-e was love. When Wall-e first sees Eve, he falls in love with her. In fact if Wall-e hadn't fallen in love with Eve, he would't have climbed aboard the spaceship and the whole movie would have a different outcome.
I believe the Bible agrees with the way love was presented. It says in Matthew 22:39, "And the second is like it: love your neighbor as yourself."
During the movie, Wall-e show that he loves Eve a lot when he grabs onto the spaceship and leaves Earth so he can try to save Eve.

  12. I agree with Erica that good overcoming evil was a big theme, but I dont think that all the robots were bad. The evil robot was Auto, the robot that took the plant and didn't want the spaceship to go back to earth. He tried to rule over the ship and tell the captain what to do.

  13. Another theme that I thought was important was to never give up. When wall-e first fell in love with Eva and she shut off he never gave up on her. He kept taking care of her and loving her. Another example is when Eva's ship came back for her, he didn't want to let her go so he ran as fast as he could to go with her and went through a lot of trouble to see her again.

    1. i agree with Kalista, but i'd like to add how the captain never gave up on getting back to earth. That he made plans on how to distract otto so wall-e and eve could get back to captain's quarters to insert the plant into the pod.

    2. I totally agree that to 'never give up' was a huge theme in Wall-E. Even when Eve didn't really appreciate Wall-E, he didn't give up on her. Not only did Wall-E not give up on Eve, but when things got really rough Eve stuck with Wall-E. When Wall-E was hurt she didn't give up trying to fix him. Also, Eve never gave up trying to get the plant to the captain, even when the situation looked hopeless.

  14. Another theme I thought was important was friendship. In the beginning Wall-e and Eva don't have a friendship at all, Eva even shoots at him. Over time their friendship evolves and they are there to help each other in times of need.

    1. I agree with miranda frendship also was a HUGE part of the movie. Adding on to wat miranda said, even wall-e made two new friends when he was with eve outside of the ship. Those two relizaed how important friendship was. It really doen't matter if you have one or a thousand friends, friendship is all about being there when each other are down and when we need some cheering up the most it helps a lot to have true friends and not fake friends.

  15. I agree with Miranda that friendship was a theme in the movie, and another theme is loyalty which kind of goes along with that. Wall-E was so loyal to Eve that he held onto the outside of a spaceship, because he thought she was in trouble. Towards the end of the movie, Eve showed her loyalty to Wall-E when he was broken and she fixed him.

  16. Love was one of the biggest themes in this movie because when Eva was about to leave earth, and go back the the spaceship, Wall-E climbed the ship and held on to the ship until they landed onto the mother ship. If Wall-E hadn't of done this, then he would've never saved the plant and helped bring everyone back home to earth.

    1. I agree with Cooper. One of the biggest themes was love. If Wall-e never loved Eva then he never would have got on the ship to try to find her. Without that part of the movie those people would still be on that ship and the planet would have never been saved

    2. love was a main aspect in the movie. it made up most of the plot. we are suppose to love one another. (as it says in the bible) god also wanted adam and EVE to find love and be married in the beginning when he created man and woman. walle and EVA did not show love towards each other during the whole movie BUT walle was in love with her. God loves us even though we may betray him or simply ignore him. eve tried to kill walle and ignore him but walle's persisntancy showed through and he loved her the whole movie.

  17. I also agree with Cooper. I also think that love is one of the most major ideas in the film. In fact, Corinthians 13:1 says, " If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal." Wall-E wasn't just a dead, lifeless robot, he actually had a purpose in life.

  18. I also thought that perseverance was another big theme in the movie. Wall-E was determined to save Eve, and Eve was determined to get the plant so that everyone could go back to earth. James 1:4 says,"Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

    1. I agree with Samantha that a big theme is perseverence. Walle-e never stopped following Eve because he loved her even though she was trying to kill him. Another example is with the plant. Wall-e overcame many obsticles to get the plant back to Eve

  19. I agree with Samantha that perseverance was a big theme in the movie. Heres another verse about perseverance, Romans 5:3-5
says Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

  20. I agree with Samantha and Miranda that perseverance was another theme in the movie. I found another verse about perseverance. 2 Thessalonians 3:5 says, "May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance." Jesus persevered through so much suffering and hardship, and He did nothing to deserve it. Wall-E persevered in his fight to save Eve. Also, Wall-E and Eve both never gave up when they were trying to show the captain the plant and get them to come back to earth.

It wasn't just the good guys that persevere. Auto showed perseverance too when he was trying to convince the captain that earth was a bad place.

  21. I think one of the bigger themes in the movie is to never give up. Countless times in the movie bad things would happen like
Wall-E having to chase Eve into space, Eve shutting off, auto pilot, being put in the broken robot section, and getting the plant to the ship. Through out these times he never gives up.

  22. I think the biggest themes in the movie would be, onece you have an objective always follow through because with faith in God and confidence anything is possible

  24. I think a big theme in Wall-E was that it's okay to be different. Even though towards the beginning of the movie independence was looked down upon,in the end it was fine. Everyone turned out to be different and it was good. Just look at what Wall-E accomplished while he was the most unique robot on the Axiom.
