Outward Appearance
o A. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. How do the characters make judgments/decisions based upon the outward appearances of things and other characters? Are these judgments/decisions fair and right? Are all judgments we make wrong? Does the LORD ever want us to make judgments?
o B. Simply by observing the characters in the film, we do not know their hearts; but at the same time, by their actions and words, we get clues about their motivations and beliefs. Giving actual examples from the film, discuss specific characters and what drives them to do what they are doing. Considering these motivations/actions (both good and bad), how do we see similar motivations/actions in our culture (either in general or specifically in our school)?
The humans in the movie actually judge themselves becaus they want to be just like other people so the beecome obess and lazy. So once they became obess they became more dependent on the machines to do all the work for them. Plus they rely on the machines to make their food into drinks because they are to lazy to do it themselves. These decisions aren't right. The judgements that we make are mostly wrong. God wouldn't be pleased at most of our decisions. I think that God should be the only one to make decisions. The reason why I say this is because some of our decisions is what we put infront of our eyes. I honestly don't think we should put anything inappropriate infront our eyes because God is not pleased with that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kelsy. The humans in this movie would look at other people to decide on what color to wear. If other people were wearing red then they would wear red too. God is not pleased with this because he made us all uniqe and DIFFERENT. So we should embrase that and not try to be like everyone else.
DeleteI agree. A lot of people now think that they aren't cool enough or pretty enough if they don't have what someone else may have. God dislikes this, because for one, that is jealousy which is a sin. And two, it's just not a healthy way to live life.
DeleteI definitely agree woth you Kelsey. But i don't think that the humans were judging themselves on what to wear and that kind of thing but that wanted what was new because that is what they were used to. Keep in mind these people had no idea what it was like to put any effort intoanything until Wall-E came aboard their ship.
DeleteThere are a ton of different things that motivated people in the movie. One of the more obvious motivations was between Wall-E and Eve. Wall-E loved Eve, which caused him to protect her from the rain and go into space with her.
ReplyDeleteAnother example was when auto wouldn't let the captain return to earth. He was motivated by the fact that the earth was contaminated, and it wasn't safe to go back. He saw the video from 700 years ago and thought that the earth was still like that and hadn't changed any.
Also, we know that Eve came to earth to look for signs that life is sustainable, so she was motivated by her search for plants.
I really agree with Rachel, I mean the way Wall-e loves Eve isn't like normal love It's a love where he wanted to protect Eve to last moment.
ReplyDeleteanother example is the way the captain is motivated to save the poeple and tell them about earth and to take them there. even though after watching eve's recording and seeing how bad and distroyed it is he feels like he has to fix it and restore it back to how it was shown on his computer.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Rachel. I also noticed when Eve had the motivation to save Wall-E from being blown up in the space pod thing. I also saw how the captain was motivated to get the people back to earth, and not just be lazy and stay in space forever.
ReplyDeleteI see similar motivations in our culture like when the captain was motivated to put the people back on earth. People today will be motivated to just get off their chair, stop watching TV or listening to their ipods and get outside and do something.
ReplyDeleteIs it really wrong to have amchines do things for us and to rely on them? I cook my food in the microwave and rely on it to make my food warm, but is that a sin? If it is then why? It isn't in the ten commandments to do everything manually.
ReplyDeleteMy computer is freaking out. the above post was meant for Kelsey's first post.
DeleteWell, Moria, in the movie, those people relied on the machines to do everything for them . For example, they were relying on those machines to take them places and to cook their food. Also, in the Bible, they don’t know what machines are. So let me ask you this, how can the Bible command us to do something they don’t even know about?
DeleteMoira, in the Bible God put in place from the beginning that man should work. So yes in a way I do agree with you I love the microwave because it makes it easier, but you are not relying on the microwave to make your food and a magical hand to bring it to you. In the movie they had to do nothing. They were so dependent on the machines they did not have to walk. In fact most of them if not all of them probably didn't know how to walk. At least you would not be lazy enough to get up and walk to the microwave or change your clothes. That also goes along with laziness which the Bible also talks about. Laziness IS a sin. I'm sure if God wanted everything to be done for us while we sit around he would have made it that way.
DeleteNo that is not a sin. But ifyou have a machine that takes you from your couch to the microwave, have you pick out what you want to eat and then it puts in in the microwave for you then it's a sin. Because your being and extremely lazy and God intended for their to work.
DeleteThe captain was the character who sacrificed himself the most for other people. This shows a lot about his heart. For example, the people would've never made it to earth if it wasn't for the captain. The evil steering wheel was trying to keep everyone in space, but the captain overpowered the steering wheel to get everybody back to earth. The captain was the one who learned to take care of the plant by watering it and by doing that it showed him that he needs to take care of not only himself, but the other people as well. His motives for taking care of people were good because it showed that the people have lives and they don't need to spend their lives doing nothing and always being lazy. Our world needs more people like the captain because most people don't think about anyone, but themselves.
ReplyDeleteI especially agree with Cooper on this wonderful statement.
DeleteI agree too.
DeleteMoira, it isn't a sin to use machines or even rely on them to do things like cook your food. It is bad though when you idolize those machines.
ReplyDeletei do agree with berry because relying on machines to do some things are good. but there is a "line" or a "stoppingpoint" you cannot let them run your life or it becomes laziness. you also cannot, as berry said, idolize them. the people in wall-e COMPLETELY relied on them and it engroused their lives. each of their lives revolved around using machines to do their work. but in modern times it is not a sin to, for example, "use a microwave, or to use a computer as you are now on this website." it is ok for machines that are built to help us but there is a "line."
DeleteI agree. It's not really a sin to have machines that are built to help you. It's that the people in the movie became so lazy because they were relying on the machines to much. It's like how we rely on our parents to give us money everyday so we can get us a snack. Think of it that way. But on the other hand they did idolize the machines. Plus in the bible it says something about idolatry though.Leviticus 19:4 says,"Do not turn to idols or make for yourselves any gods of cast metal: I am the LORD your God."
DeleteAlso, Leviticus 26:1 says,"You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect an image or pillar, and you shall not set up a figured stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the LORD your God."
I agree with Rachel, machines or things that do stuff for you are not bad; however, they can easily and quickly become bad if you spend all your time thinking about it or using it. Basically, if you start worshiping or idolize a machine or something THEN it becomes bad.
DeleteMachines, money, exercise, and food are all examples of things that are not bad or sinful by themselves. It is how we use them and what place of importance they take in our lives.
DeleteRachel is right it's not a sin to use machines to do things for you. It is a sin though when you become so lazy you never have to put forth effort and the machine does everything.
DeleteTowards the end of the movie, Auto, the evil robot, judged the world because he thought it was not a good place to go back to since it was a mess when they left it. It isn't fair to make judgements. A lot of judgements we make hurt people or make high expectations for others. God doesn't want us to judge each other because we can ruin relationships or hurt people's feelings.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Elisabeth. Auto believed that just because the earth couldn't sustain human life 700 years ago, it is still a bad place to live. He did not realize that a ton of things change in that much time.
ReplyDeleteWell, that's true. But did you think of it this way. Auto was just trying to protect the humans from whatever danger he thought was on earth. I still agree with you guys but that is what i think auto was trying to do even though he lied to the captain and told him it was top secret.
DeleteI agree with you Kelsey. Auto was trying to protect the people from earth. All he has seen was bad images of earth which made him think it was a dangerous place.
DeleteKelsey, I agree with you that Auto had good intentions. He thought the earth was a dangerous place, and was just trying to protect the people from it.
ReplyDeleteI also agree auto's intention were good but the intentions itself were bad, just like in 2 Samuel 6. Uzzah got struck down for touching the ark of the covenant even though his intentions were good.
Deletee.sems, Why do you call auto pilot the evil robot? Were his intentions really that bad if he wanted to protect the humans from going back to an earth he thought was toxic. The programers of this robot made him to protect and guide the humans so is it really his fault?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Callier, I don't really think Auto was evil just because he didn't do what the Captain thought was the right and good thing to do, but he also deceived the Captain. Auto gave him a message that was over 700 years old and acted like it was new, which would greatly affect the choice to go back to earth or not. Also, Auto's consequences in his actions caused great harm to others, like Wall-E.
DeleteI definitly think that the movie at some points were kind of a wake up call to us as human that the more technology that is discovered the more we are going to start relying on it and if we dont as people take a moment to realize that it is capable of taking us over, our whole human race could be at risk of being controlled by technology.
ReplyDeleteLove some of the thoughts on Auto. But is Auto bad in the fact that he wants to have control over the humans? Remember once they found plant life growing on earth it was the Axiom's job to return to the planet and bring about restoration. So isn't Auto acting against what he was designed to do?
ReplyDeleteMr. Scott's Bible Class is finished with the project.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mr. Scott when he says that he was acting against what he was designed to do. After having so many years of control of the ship when he saw the plant he was kind of shaken and didn't want to return back to earth.
ReplyDelete1Samuel 16:7But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." In this movie everyone wants to be like eachother. They see a new type of shirt they put it on.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mr. Scott, but I don't know if what Auto wanted to do was 'control the humans'. Since I do not know the character's heart, I can not say this fore sure, but maybe Auto was just afraid of change. He had been living the same way for over 700 years, and he might've wanted things to stay the way they were. But he was designed to do what the Captain told him to do, but he didn't.
ReplyDeleteYah, I think he was just doing what he was programed to do, and when that message was sent to him he was told to stay in space no matter what and robots can't figure something like that out.
DeleteI agree with Katherine on that also, but i would like to say, What if Auto wasn't for sure that it was safe to go back to earth since they have been gone for a huge amount of time. Auto was the side kick of every captain and none of them had tld him hat it was safe for them to come back so I can see how come he didn't want to go back to earth.
